Abita Brewing Company, Abita Springs, LA
Experience the magic of Purple Haze. Clouds of real raspberries swirl in this tart and tantalizing lager inspired by the good spirits and dark mysteries of New Orleans. Brewed with pilsner and wheat malts along with Vanguard hops, let the scent of berries in the hazy purple brew put a spell on you.
Purple Haze is definitely hazy, with a golden/amber color. Large Marge smells nothing but fruit, but Father Jack picks up a lager smell in there too. It has a very fruity taste. It is very fruity up front, kind of dies a bit, and really has no aftertaste. It is light and very drinkable.
Father Jack – I always associate Purple Haze with tailgating. For my first ever tailgate it was Louisiana in late August (read hot and humid) and I decided to be the badarse who brought big bottles of Chimay Grande Réserve (Blue). It was miserable. Great beer but not what you want at a burning hot tailgate. I took the advice of fellow tailgaters and settled on Purple Haze as a great hot weather tailgate beer and it never let me down.
This is a good, year-round beer, though it’s great in the summer and we’ll always thinks of it as a tailgate beer. Abita is the first Louisiana craft brew either of us ever had and it’s still a solid choice.
Would we have it again? At a tailgate; any time we are at a wedding reception and there are no other options!
